For our new site and more information about Balcan Lamp Crushers & the Balcan
Lamp Recycling MPC4000 Lamp Recycling Plant.
In 1980, Balcan produced the first lamp crusher specifically designed to cope
with
the inherent hazards of waste lamps (specifically mercury containing fluorescent
tubes and low pressure
sodium lamps). Today we offer a comprehensive range of products and services
to offer the most efficient and cost effective option for everyone who generates
waste fluorescent tubes, mercury bearing gas discharge lamps and compact fluorescent
lamps & bulbs (CFL).
Balcan Lamp & Bulb Crusher Features
With the original lamp crusher, there are 3 models of our manually operated range
of FSL (Fluorescent & Sodium
Lamp) Lamp Crushers and one
of our electrically operated Low Loader model. All lamp crushers are fabricated
throughout in stainless steel. All lamp crushers should be used in conjunction
with our Dry Filter extraction kit, or SOAKUP Sack System, when crushing mercury
bearing lamps such as fluorescent tubes.
The Dry kit allows lamps to be crushed dry and sent to the Balcan Lamp Recycling
plant for total processing.
When the SOAKUP Sack System is used it overcomes the need to discharge mercury
bearing effluent from the crushing process into drains. We offer a collection
and disposal service for these sacks, but they are unable to be recycled due to
the contents being wet.
Electrically operated low loaded Lamp Crusher
This lamp crusher was designed to crush fluorescent tubes and other waste lamps on
a continuous basis just as quickly as they could be fed into it.
Balcan Electric Lamp Crusher with Drum Adaption
Balcan Lamp Crusher with Van/Truck mounting option.
There are three models of
electrically operated Balcan Low Loaded Lamp Crusher that produces dry, crushed
lamp debris
suitable for disposal by recycling or any other method!
When these lamp crushers are not in use, a new
and special feature is a sealing plate which prevents the escape of mercury
vapour from the container of debris back into the chute and from where it can
escape into the atmosphere. This was designed to overcome concerns expressed by
the EPA in Washington, about US manufactured drum mounted crushers that they
considered allowed the escape of mercury vapour.
A special
electric Dry Filter Unit is provided to replace the original water spray which
was used to prevent the escape of mercury bearing dust and mercury vapour generated
during the crushing operation. This
filter ensures the lamp crusher operates at negative pressure and allows lamps
to be
crushed in a dry state so that the resultant debris is suitable for processing
by recycling. Phosphor powder & mercury vapours are
drawn through a 5 micron filter bag for collection of the coarse dust and whilst
the
mercury vapour passes through, it is then removed and cleaned by
activated carbon so it can be exhausted to atmosphere. Bags will fill with powder after processing
1,200-1,500 lamps and are easily replaced.
The activated carbon should last 1-2 years depending upon the type and
sizes of lamps crushed.
This model can
be supplied for 220/240 volts or 110 volts supply and only requires an
electricity supply of 300 watts. It is
available in the following 3 versions: -
Options:
One Low
Loaded electrically operated Lamp Crusher fabricated throughout of stainless
steel. Its chute accepts and totally
encases all sizes of lamps up to 8ft in length and 4.5” in diameter. The crusher accepts lamps loaded in handfuls
as quickly as they can be picked up.
Supplied complete with a pair of special
mounting rails to allow the crusher to be mounted firmly on the floor of vans
and to be slid out from the back and supported by the rails whilst in
operation. The Dry Filter Unit is
supplied to be more compact so it takes up the minimum of room when mounted on
the wall of the van.
Specially designed wheeled stainless
steel trolley on which the lamp crusher is mounted and allows it to be pushed
over
an empty drum without the need to move the drum. This overcomes the problems of moving full
heavy drums from under the machine.
This lamp crusher is mounted on a stainless
steel trolley so it can be moved over a large site to crush lamps where they
are accumulated.
The chute of all models can be
folded in half.
All models of lamp crushers, complete
with their Dry Filter Unit use a total of 300 watts of electricity. We only need to know details of the voltage
of your electricity supply.
Once assembled and wired to a
suitable electricity supply crushers are ready for immediate use.
A new
modification is available allowing the crusher to accept large diameter circular
lamps up to
16” in diameter and small tungsten bulbs in quantity.
Exisiting users of a Balcan Electric Lamp Crusher can have their unit converted.

These accept all kinds and sizes of fluorescent tubes and mercury & sodium
bulbs. They are
designed for mounting against a wall – in a suitably
ventilated location. This is important for the safe dispersal
of hydrogen which is generated when Low Pressure Sodium (SOX) lamps are crushed.
These units crush T12 fluorescent tubes in batches of the six (Junior model),
twenty
(Standard model) and thirty (Maxi model). They are available in different heights
to accept 1.2M, 1.8M & 2.4M. The two later models
are fitted with double doors through which lamps are loaded.
When handling small lamps & bulbs, the bottom section can be kept closed
to form a hopper
into which more lamps & bulbs can be loaded.
A water spray is used during the crushing to
neutralise sodium and overcome the fire and explosion risks of SOX (low pressure
sodium lamps).
All Balcan manual lamp crushers have a safety interlock ensuring operation cannot
commence
with the loading doors open. A unique adjustable breaking chamber ensures the
minimum of effort is required to operate the machine. Also that nothing goes through
unbroken nor is excessively crushed. It overcomes jamming and damage (whatever
is put through) because it is so easily to release. It also facilitates cleaning!
All lamp crushers have a high standard of natural louvered ventilation at all
levels
of their casings and their lids. This combination allows the best possible venting
and explosion relief for hydrogen and was recommended to us by the HSE (Health
& Safety Executive).
All lamp crushers can be supplied & fitted with a stainless steel debris
bin for use with
Low Pressure Sodium (SOX) lamps and others that can ignite. During the crushing
operation, it fills with water and ensures all debris
is totally immersed. The sodium is neutralised under controlled conditions.
